Reading and Reflection: New American Bible edition

Posted by universalis on 1 April 2024

We are pleased to announce the publication of the USA edition of “Reading and Reflection”, using readings from the New American Bible. (For the Jerusalem Bible edition for the rest of the world, see the announcement here.)

This book contains the readings at Mass according to the official lectionary of the Catholic Church, for every day of every year. Each and every reading is accompanied by an accessible and scholarly commentary by Dom Henry Wansbrough OSB.

Cover

“Reading and Reflection” is not intended for use in church. Rather, it takes the Lectionary as the basis for a systematic course of scripture reading, together with commentaries to deepen understanding and stimulate thought. It works equally well if you have been to Mass that day or haven’t; or whether or not you ever go to Mass at all.

The readings include the full 3-year cycle of Sunday readings and the full 2-year cycle of weekday readings. The translation used is the New American Bible, which is officially approved for use in the dioceses of the United States.

Dom Henry Wansbrough, the author of the commentaries, is a monk of Ampleforth Abbey and a noted biblical scholar. He is the editor of the New Jerusalem Bible and the Revised New Jerusalem Bible. An introduction by Martin Kochanski sets the context of the readings and explains the logic of the liturgical year. Martin Kochanski is the creator and editor of Universalis and the author of “The Creed in Slow Motion”.

  • Rich linking lets you get quickly to the readings for any day you want, and get from one day to another.
  • An index of bible passages lets you find the day on which a passage is used and read its commentary.
  • An index of dates gives you the answer to “Which liturgical day is this?” for any date between 2023 and 2034 and takes you directly to the day’s readings.
  • Your e-book reader’s search function lets you find any phrase across the whole Lectionary, and find the reading which it belongs to.

Price: $9.99–$10.99.

Kindle users may be pleased. However, since I don’t use a Kindle I’m wondering if a computer version might be coming at some point?
