Universalis and old iPads (and Androids!)
Posted by universalis on 13 November 2021
A recent change in the Internet means that older iPads such as the iPad 2 or the original iPad Mini are unable to reach many web sites (even Wikipedia is affected, apparently!).
This problem prevents Universalis and Catholic Calendar from connecting to our servers. The result is that music and audio cannot be downloaded, and that it is not possible to unlock Catholic Calendar using a registration code.
This blog post explains how to get round this problem, both for Universalis and for all other affected web sites.
Update: Old Android devices running Android 5.1.1 and 6.0 (and probably 7.0) have exactly the same problem.

Cassian and Cassiodorus
Posted by universalis on 5 November 2021
We have corrected two small errors in the English-language printed books. This means that Universalis does not match the books exactly, so this blog post is made, for reference, in case anyone notices the difference.

The chant marks in the psalms
Posted by universalis on 11 August 2021
From time to time people ask about the stars * and daggers † which appear in the psalms and canticles. They always appear in the Latin, and in the English you can turn them on and off.
The stars and daggers are marks to guide the chanting of the psalms and canticles. Especially when you are on your own, you don’t need to worry about conforming to them, but they can be a helpful guide.

Universalis on Linux
Posted by universalis on 1 July 2021
There are versions for the downloadable Universalis program for Windows and for Mac, but there is no specific version for Linux. However, some people have reported success in using the Windows download on Linux (see the earlier blog posts from 2009 and 2012). Here is another report from a user, which includes some specific instructions:
