SSL errors on very old iPads

If you are using Catholic Calendar on a very old iPad running iOS 9.3.5, you may have difficulty activating it with your registration code. An error message can appear saying “An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be established”.
The same problem will occur with Universalis as well, if you have subscribed to the spoken audio and the app needs to download it. The cause is the same and so is the cure.
This is because this old version of iOS is not able to recognise the certificate we use for secure web communications. You will find other websites also affected, even including Wikipedia.
On your iPad, follow this link:
https://letsencrypt.org/certs/isrgrootx1.pem
This leads to a “root certificate” which will allow your iPad to understand the certificates used by modern websites.
When you follow the link, Safari will fling you over to the Settings app, and the Settings app will ask you if you want to store the “ISRG Root X1” profile. Say that you do, and all will be well.
